Grey's Anatomy gets Texas twist in new spin-off series
Shonda Rhimes heads south for rural medical drama set in West Texas
The Grey's Anatomy universe is packing its scrubs and heading south. ABC has ordered a straight-to-series Texas-set spin-off from original creator Shonda Rhimes and current showrunner Meg Marinis, marking the franchise's first venture outside major cities and the West Coast.
According to Deadline, this fourth instalment brings fresh drama to rural America, swapping Seattle's Grey Sloan Memorial for a medical centre in the middle of nowhere. The untitled series promises new characters whilst keeping that signature Grey's heart.
What is the Grey's Anatomy spin-off about?
The new series is described as an edgy drama centred on a team working at a rural West Texas medical centre - characterised as 'the last chance for care before miles of nowhere'. Unlike previous spin-offs Private Practice and Station 19, which featured established characters from the mothership series, this instalment won't spin off a series regular, says the outlet.
However, it will likely connect to the Grey's Anatomy world through one or more characters, possibly Debbie Allen's Catherine Fox. The setting marks a departure from the franchise's typical urban hospital environments, venturing into unexplored territory with rural healthcare challenges.
Who is the cast?
The cast for the Texas spin-off hasn't been announced yet. Unlike previous spin-off Station 19, which starred Jason George's Ben, and Private Practice, which featured Kate Walsh's Addison, this series will be built around an entirely new group of doctors rather than spinning off an existing character from Grey's Anatomy.
Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis serve as co-creators, writers, and executive producers, with Ellen Pompeo also executive producing.
"I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey's Anatomy universe," producer Meg Marinis said. "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey's for more than two decades - all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it."

What is the original series about?
Grey's Anatomy, ABC's longest-running primetime scripted series, recently wrapped its 22nd season with nearly 6 million viewers, rising 9% from the previous week, according to Deadline.
Grey’s Anatomy follows the messy personal and professional lives of surgeons at Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, led by Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and a tight‑knit crew including Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).
The show helped define the modern hospital soap, mixing life‑and‑death surgeries with big‑budget drama, romance and heart‑wrenching losses, most iconically Derek’s plane‑crash exit. It’s ABC’s longest‑running scripted series and the backbone of the whole Grey’s universe, churning out medical crises and tear‑jerker storylines for more than two decades.
The medical drama has already launched two previous spin-offs, in the form of Private Practice - which ran for six seasons (2007-2013), following Kate Walsh's Addison to Los Angeles. Station 19 enjoyed seven seasons (2018-2024) focusing on Jason George's firefighter Ben.
Ellen Pompeo has starred as Meredith Grey throughout the series' run, with the show executive produced by Shonda Rhimes through her Shondaland production company. Season 23 has already been renewed.
When is the Texas spin-off out?
The untitled Grey's Anatomy Texas spin-off is expected to premiere in early 2027, midway through the network's traditional TV season rather than in the autumn launch window. The series will likely receive a limited-run order of around nine episodes.
Where can I watch it?
The original Grey's Anatomy has been streaming exclusively on Disney+ UK since 2021, with new episodes typically arriving the day after their US broadcast on ABC. So the Texas spin-off will likely release on Disney+ in the UK, but broadcast details haven't been announce yet.
