With shows like Motherland, Can You Keep a Secret?, Amandaland and Daddy Issues in recent years, it safe to say the BBC has invested a lot in sitcoms, with fans loving the new shows.
And the latest sitcom to get everybody talking is Ann Droid, which is written and created by Diane Morgan and Sarah Kendall.
What is Ann Droid?
The BBC say of the plot: 'In a world where AI is looming larger and ever present, Ann Droid asks the question: what is replaceable and what is not? As funny, as it is poignant – Ann Droid tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Sue (Sue Johnston) and Linda (Diane Morgan) a social humanoid robot, created to keep elderly people company and monitor their health.
'Sue’s (Sue Johnston) husband David passed away 18 months ago and her only son, Michael (Paul Ready), is moving out – again - to try and fix his marriage - again. But the good news is he’s got Sue a surprise to help her live independently, a care provider with a difference - a second hand AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot (Diane Morgan). Created to keep the ageing population company and monitor their health, taking the pressure off the ever-stretched NHS.
'It’s Sue’s worst nightmare. An overly attentive, socially inept pain in the arse. But she soon works out she can use the droid to her benefit in settling scores and doing the things her son never gets round to. What develops is a buddy comedy between an older woman and her robot who isn’t quite as advanced socially as she is technically.'

After watching the first episode, TV fans have been expressing their love for the new series, with many even binging all six episodes.
One wrote: 'We started watching Ann Droid last night. It was great fun and even laugh out loud funny in places. Diane Morgan is brilliant playing the carer robot brought in to look after Sue Johnston after her son moves out. Good, harmless entertainment!' (sic)
Another said: 'Ann Droid on the BBC. Absolutely wonderful - funny, sad and some powerful messaging underlying the madness. Diane Morgan is absolutely brilliant, as always. Bolton's finest!' (sic)
Somebody else expressed: 'Watched the first episode of Ann Droid, couldn't stop, binged all 6'. (sic)
Another added: 'Started binge watching Ann Droid last night and the fact it’s only 6 episodes is a CRIME'. (sic)
After hearing his name appear on the show, money expert Martin Lewis also posted, saying: 'Got a shock watching Ann Droid with Mrs MSE to suddenly hear the brilliant Diana Morgan say my name in the dialogue! A rather bizarre, but lovely, experience'. (Sic)

Emily In Paris
After season five dropped in December 2025, and was met with huge viewing figures, Netflix were quick to renew Emily In Paris for a sixth season. No start date has been announced, but it could be late in 2026.
Vigil
Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie are reprising their roles as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre in BBC drama Vigil. Filming wrapped in Scotland in January 2026, so we will see show return later in 2026. At this stage there's no exact date!
The Day of the Jackal
Series one of thriller The Day of the Jackal broke viewing records for Sky Atlantic, so there's no surprise that bosses were quick to renew the show for a second series, before the first was even over! Although there's no air date just yet, filming started in 2025, so we could see the show return sometime in 2026.
Line of Duty
Now that the BBC have confirmed there's going to be a seventh series of award-winning crime drama Line of Duty, fans are counting down the months! Filming is due to begin in Spring 2026, and bosses have now confirmed it will air in 2027.
Unforgotten
After series six aired in early 2025, ITV/STV bosses were quick to recommission crime drama Unforgotten for a seventh series, with Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan set to return. There's no official start date just yet, but filming did begin at the start of 2026.

Following the first series which aired in 2025, This City Is Ours has been renewed for a second series, with filming now complete! Julie Graham, James Nelson-Joyce and Jack McMullen will all return. There's no start date just yet, but bosses have said it will return this autumn.
