Silo: What happened in season three, episode nine - 'Farewell'?

As the finale of season three nears, in season three episode nine of Silo, called 'Farewell', we get to find out more about how the Silo began, and Bernard gives himself up to Camille.
'Farewell' is an episode of two halves, with a breath-taking ending which will have viewers desperately wanting to watch the final episode before it's released on Friday 4th September. There's also a cameo appearance from a very famous singer, so read on for the full recap...
Episode nine - 'Farewell'
The penultimate episode starts with Bernard joining Camille in The Vault where they talk to the Algorithm. Bernard tells Camille he wants Juliette to be released and can help her popularity, by letting her reveal all the various things he did when he was head of IT – such as lying about Juliette wanting to go out to clean. However, his idea backfires, when the Algorithm suggests that they do that, and then he goes out to clean, rather than spending a quiet life.
Shortly after hearing that Bernard is going to be sent to clean, Sheriff Billings is called to a meeting with Martha, Knox and others, where he’s told that Bernard offered himself as a distraction, and they need access to water filtration.
Billings and Knox then take Shirley, Martha, and Donny to Critical Supply, where they reveal a hidden passage behind a gate.
Juliette, who has been held in a cell with Robert Sims is summoned by Camille, where she tells Juliette that Bernard will be sent to clean. While she’s there, Camille hears on the radio that crowds are gathering, with a “couple of hundred following the two (Knox and Shirley) who led the rebellion”. Juliette manages to gain Camille's trust when she defuses the situation, telling the crowds they haven’t put drugs in the water, and it’s “just Vitamin D”.
Juliette joins Bernard in the holding cell, before he goes out to clean, where she asks him why he turned himself in. And he explained: “To give Walker and friends a distraction.” He also tells Juliette that he believes that the Algorithm (or Entity) is a person is Silo 1, “flesh and blood, no different or better than you or me. A person deciding our fate.”
Stripped of a suit, Bernard is then sent out to clean with the Silo’s residents watching him from the cafeterias. Reaching the surface, Bernard walks towards the all too familiar ridge, with the tree that surrounds the Silo. As he reaches the top he looks around, before struggling to breathe, and collapsing next to the tree. However, just as he looks up at the bare branches, he briefly sees a tree full of leaves… 👀
Just as the residents are watching Bernard, the Silo is rocked by a huge explosion, as Knox, his dad Gus and more are blowing their way into the rock and earth.
Meanwhile in the Before Times, Helen, accompanied by Daniel is having a baby scan, where she is told she’s nearly at the cutoff point for flying, but she’s given the go-head to fly to Atlanta. Once in Atlanta they visit Charlotte and her wife (Senator Thurman’s daughter) Anna. Sitting down to enjoy a meal, Daniel and Charlotte repeat their long-running joke about if their parents were alive now, they would be “clawing frantically to get out of their coffins”.
While Daniel and Anna chat over the washing up, Charlotte opens up to Helen about The Pact. She tells Helen: “It’s some crazy s—t she (Anna) and Dr Victor... so it’s a book of rules about how to live underground for 500 years without killing each other.” Victor later reveals that “AI wrote it, we just did some editing”. Charlotte also reveals that people are already living in the silos.
The next day, Daniel and Helen arrive at the silos for their grand opening. Meeting up with Henry as they arrive, he reveals there are no lifts in the silos so people get enough exercise. The pair are then separated as Henry whisks Daniel off to Silo 1 to see Charlotte and the Senator, while Helen is left to explore Silo 18.
As Victor and Daniel approach Silo 1, Peter Gabriel is performing on stage, when Victor reveals Peter and his family wanted to see inside a silo, and they’ve been assigned 17.
When Daniel arrives Charlotte is nowhere to be seen, so he sends her some messages, including one that says: ‘If Mom and Dad were alive right now…’ He gets a reply saying: ‘Mom and Dad would say it’s best to sit still and be patient’. Not the response that he had been expecting.
Minutes later, Helen is emerging from Silo 18, as Daniel reaches the ridge around Silo 1 he calls her, but the single is terrible and they can’t really hear each other. Just as the signal gets better there’s a huge explosion, sending a mushroom cloud into the sky and everyone running for their lives. Daniel is pulled back into Silo 1, while Helen ends up in Silo 18 as the sweeping atomic wave reaches them.

Going out to clean
Going out to clean in Silo its basically a death penalty. Residents of the Silo who go out to clean don't come back alive. They are sent out for two reasons, either because they break the law or they ask to go out voluntarily.
When they are outside, they clean the lens on a camera that displays on the screens in the cafeterias. Over time the lens gets covered in dust and debris from the toxic wasteland the residents of the Silo can see.

Up Top
The Silo consists of 144 levels, and they are connected by a single spiral staircase, there are no lifts. It is split into three main sections. Up Top is where the primary government offices, the Sheriff's station, and the surface airlock are situated.
The Mids
Below Up Top is The Mids, where many of the residents live along with the schools, and The Farm that grows food for the population. It also houses the Mids Medical, where Juliette's dad, a doctor, oversaw the nursery.
Down Deep
At the bottom of the Silo is the Down Deep. The people who live down there and keep the generator going rarely go up to The Mids or Up Top. There are many Deputy stations throughout the Silo, but the Down Deep Deputy Station is where Deputy Hank Murphy is charge. He is good friends with Juliette and Knox who work on the generator.
The Mines
Being sent to the mines is seen as a punishment for those who break the law. Iron ore was mined from The Mines, which are dirty and full of rats. Lukas Kyle is banished to The Mines for not reporting Juliette's relic.
The Digger Void
The area around the digger that was used to build the Silo is called The Digger Void. In the Digger Void is a camp made by George, where he hides a few relics, later Bernard is found hiding there, after many believed he had died.
Shadow
Someone's shadow is like their deputy, they are expected to learn from their mentor. In one of the early episodes Juliette gets a shadow called Terry Cooper. Juliette was previously Knox's Shadow, when she first transferred from The Mids.
The Algorithm
A select few from the Silo ever encounter The Algorithm, a voice that speaks to certain people about the Silo in a bright room with stepped walls. Although the subtitles call this voice The Algorithm it isn't referred to by the characters as such, and many don't know of its existence.
The Farm and 'going to the farm'
The Farm refers to the many farms in the Silo, where they grow crops and have animals such as pigs and chickens for the 10,000-strong population.
However, there's a slightly grim feature of The Farm, when members of the population die they can be buried in The Farm, so that their body's nutrients helps to feed the crops.
Before Times
Before the Silo was built was the Before Times - set in the near future (2040s). Not much is known about the Before Times in the first two seasons, with the third season beginning to explore why the Silo was created.
Judicial
Similar to the Sheriff, Judicial help to keep law and order in the Silo, they are responsible for enforcing The Pact and confiscating any relics.
Relic
Something from before the Rebellion. It's illegal to be in possession of a relic and knowing that someone has one and not reporting them can also be a punishable offence.
The Pact
The Pact is a book that the rules of the Silo are set out in. Several characters refer to The Pact throughout the series and how they must follow the rules.
The Rebellion
140 years before Silo is set there was a Rebellion when the residents of the Silo stormed the upper levels wanting to open the door to the surface and poison the entire Silo with air from outside. The Rebels burnt all the books, computer drives and anything from the Before Times.
Safeguard
A hidden pipe system which can flood the Silo with toxic gas. Use of it is designed to end the entire Silo's existence, but it isn't controlled by Silo 18, instead it is controlled by the overseers of Silo 1.
