Everything there is to know about Wet Leg
The indie darlings have three GRAMMYs already!
From a small-town start to global stardom, Wet Leg has one of the most impressive success stories in indie-rock. Starting with the release of their hit single 'Chaise Longue' in 2021, the band's "hobby" music blew up across the world — graduating from local airwaves to Hollywood soundtracks, global ad campaigns and even the setlists of fellow superstars.
Now, with three GRAMMYs and two BRIT Awards to their name, the deadpan-pop/post-punk ensemble are still turning heads, picking up some pretty impressive nominations in the 2026 awards season too.
Once describing their songs as "sad music for party people and party music for sad people", Wet Leg are now coolly touring the world in support of their second album 'Moisturizer'. Find out when they're coming to a stage near you and read up on their meteoric rise to fame here...
Who are the members?
Initially a duo, but now a five-piece band, Wet Leg was originally made up of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers on both guitars and vocals. The band now also includes drummer Henry Holmes, bassist Ellis Durand and Josh Mobaraki on guitar and keyboard.
Former member, Doug Richards, played the drums until leaving the band in 2020.
Where are they from?
Wet Leg is from the Isle of Wight — with much of the band meeting while studying music at Platform One College.
Hester said growing up on the island was like living in 'one big sleepy town'. Meanwhile Rhian — initially born in Formby, Merseyside — moved to the Isle of Wight when she was around eight years old.
The story behind their band name
In an interview with music magazine DIFFUS back in 2022, Rhian and Hester revealed they'd called their band Wet Leg after an old term used on the Isle of Wight to describe somebody arriving off the mainland via boat.
Rhian said: "We call them wet legs because they have to get a leg wet to get over the sea to come to the island, so we just thought that it would make a good band name."
What are their most successful songs?
'Chaise Longue'
Without a doubt, their most successful single is 2021's 'Chaise Longue', which has now been certified Gold. Their first release — which was written during an extended sleepover on a chaise longue — has won numerous awards, including a GRAMMY, and has been used in many adverts and TV/movie soundtracks — including Gossip Girl and The Family Switch.
The music video, which you can watch below, has been viewed more than 18 million times on YouTube. The song is about boredom and is packed with playful innuendos. The lyrics kick off with: 'Mummy, daddy, look at me / I went to school and I got a degree / All my friends call it "the big D" / I went to school and I got the big D.'
You might recognise the iconic line: 'Is your muffin buttered? / Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?' from 2004 movie Mean Girls.
And of course who could forget the chorus, which will get stuck in your head for days: 'Hey you, over there / On the chaise longue in your underwear / What are you doing sitting down? / You should be horizontal now / On the chaise longue, on the chaise longue, on the chaise longue / All day long, on the chaise longue.'
'Wet Dream'
The band's second single 'Wet Dream' has also had great success, despite only hitting Number 74 on the UK chart (a great feat considering Wet Leg were new on the scene at the time). The song has since been certified Gold and was even covered by Harry Styles during a live set back in 2022.
'Wet Dream' was written after a break-up, and you might recognise the music video with the huge lobster claws and the following catchy intro: 'Beam me up (beam me up) / Count me in (count me in) / Three, two, one (three, two, one) / Let's begin / Here we go (here we go) / Here we go (here we go) / Here we go, here we go, here we go.'
How many albums have they released?
In July 2025, Wet Leg released their second album 'Moisturizer', dropping four singles from it the same year; 'Catch These Fists', 'CPR', 'Davina McCall' and 'Mangetout'. The album went to Number 1 in the UK and has already been certified Silver.
But it's not the only Number 1 record the indie band has to their name. Their self-titled debut album went to the top spot on its release back in 2022. It's since been certified Gold.
What awards have they won?
Wet Leg have picked up some pretty prestigious awards in the last few years — bagging Best Alternative Music Album ('Wet Leg') and Best Alternative Music Performance ('Chaise Longue') at the 2023 GRAMMYs.
They also won Best British Group and Best New Artist at the BRITs the same year. And Rhian and Hester picked up Songwriters of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards.
In 2024, Wet Leg picked up another GRAMMY, this time for Best Remix Recording, for 'Wagging Tongue'.
