George Michael is crowned Magic Radio's Idol

You voted in your thousands, and we are excited to reveal that pop icon George Michael was crowned the winner of the inaugural Magic Radio Idols countdown.
Just before 5pm on Easter Monday Nick Snaith revealed live on air that you had chosen the Carless Whisper singer as your ultimate music superstar with British rock band Queen finishing in second place, pop group Take That taking the third spot, solo superstar Ed Sheeran in fourth and top female of the chart Whitney Houston in fifth.

Number 1 – George Michael
As a musician George Michael achieved immense success across the world since first entering the charts in 1982 with Wham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do)’, He sold over 120 million albums, received a Grammy for his first solo album Faith in 1987 and went on to release a series of multimillion-selling albums winning many more awards throughout his career. Known for his talented songwriting, beautiful vocals and creative performances George Michael is a true Magic Radio Idol.
“George’s music meant absolutely everything to him” said Wham! member Shirlie Kemp whilst speaking to Magic Radio about the countdown “and I can tell you now he will be smiling down at this. He never wants to be forgotten so keep listening to his music. He really is an idol.”
Number 2 – Queen
Formed in 1970 British rock band Queen was made up of vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon. The band created some of the most anthemic songs which are still played today, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust and Under Pressure. With record sales of over 250 million they are one of the world’s best selling music artists.
Number 3 – Take That
A boyband that became a pop phenomenon Take That currently consists of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald but originally included Robbie Williams and Jason Orange when they shot to stardom in the 90’s. Hailing from Manchester Take That have had 12 number one singles in the UK and 9 number one albums as well as winning 8 BRIT Awards.
Number 4 – Ed Sheeran
With over 200 million records sold worldwide and two albums in the UK’s best-selling albums of all time list, Ed Sheeran is somewhat of a global icon. His 2017 singles Shape of You and Castle on the Hill broke records in a number of countries by debuting as the top two positions in the chart at the same time and in the same year he was crowned the world's best-selling artist. Ed has also taken on a number of acting roles including starring in Game of Thrones, Bridget Jones Baby and Yesterday.
Number 5 – Whitney Houston
Known as ‘the voice’ American singer and actress Whitney Houston is one of the most awarded performers of all time renowned for her iconic vocal delivery. Her first album Whitney Houston remains the best-selling debut album by a solo artist whilst her second album also created history by making her the first woman to debut atop the US and UK charts. Her songs ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ are among some of the best-selling singles ever.
