Earlier this year, John joined Simon Mayo on Greatest Hits Radio, where he spoke about how stand-up comedy saved his life. John explained he was a newly separated dad trying to fill a lonely evening, when he did his first gig at the Frog and Bucket in Manchester. "I was 34 years of age and it was just, it was just the fact that we were split up and Monday was the day I gave the kids back. So I was depressed and I was looking for something to do on my own. So I thought I’d go to a comedy club and it was £4 to get in," he told Simon.

Then, a throwaway offer at the door changed his life. "The guy just said, 'it’s an open mic night'. I said, 'what does that mean?' He said, 'that means if your name gets called out, you go on stage, but it also means you don’t have to pay the £4 entrance fee'. And because I was getting divorced, I thought, well, that’s four quid. She’s not getting."
