Christian Horner has been sacked from his role of team principal at Red Bull Racing with immediate effect.

Horner, 51, has led the Formula 1 team since 2005, overseeing multiple championship wins, but Red Bull’s form has slumped with four-time world champion Max Verstappen having won only two of the 12 races staged this season.

In a statement on Wednesday, Red Bull Racing managing director Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed Horner’s departure and announced that Laurent Mekies would take over as chief executive of Red Bull Racing from today.

The news comes 17 months after Horner was accused of “inappropriate behaviour” by a female colleague. He was twice cleared of any wrongdoing by the team’s parent company, Red Bull GmbH.

Red Bull has not provided further details about the decision, but thanked Horner for his long-standing leadership.

Red Bull Group chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff said: “We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.

“With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula One.

“Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.”
