Everything you need to know from start times to travel advice for Sunday’s event
One of the UK’s biggest running events returns this morning as tens of thousands of people prepare to take part in the adidas Manchester Marathon.
More than 42,000 runners are expected to take on the 26.2 mile course across Greater Manchester/
Organisers say around 140,000 spectators will line the streets, making it one of the largest and most popular marathons in Europe.
Key details for race day
The marathon begins near Old Trafford, with the finish line on Oxford Road outside the University of Manchester.
Elite runners will set off first at 08:55, followed by staggered waves throughout the morning.
Participants are being advised to arrive at least 45 minutes before their start time to allow for bag drop and entry into their wave.
The route takes runners through Stretford, Sale, Altrincham and Chorlton before returning to the city centre.
The course is known for being flat and fast, with many runners achieving personal best times.
What runners can expect
Facilities at the start area include toilets, hydration points and warm-up spaces.
A bag drop service will transport belongings from the start to the finish line.
There will be eight water stations along the route, along with energy gel points.
Pacers will also be available to help runners hit target times ranging from two hours 45 minutes to six hours.
At the finish line, runners will receive medals, t-shirts, refreshments and access to recovery areas.
Where to watch the race
Large crowds are expected across Greater Manchester, with several popular viewing spots highlighted by organisers.
Deansgate is expected to be busy early on, with entertainment and supporters lining the route.
Sale and Altrincham are known for strong community support, while Chorlton and Stretford offer busy local viewing points.
The finish line on Oxford Road is likely to be the most popular spot, as runners complete their marathon.
Spectators are being encouraged to arrive early and plan their day in advance.
Travel and road closures
Public transport is strongly recommended for those attending the event.
Metrolink services provide access to the start area, with stops at Trafford Bar, Exchange Quay and Pomona all within walking distance.
Road closures will be in place across Greater Manchester throughout Sunday morning and early afternoon, affecting areas including Old Trafford, Stretford, Sale, Altrincham, Chorlton and the city centre.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time and check routes before travelling.
Rail disruption warning
Damage to overhead lines near Manchester Piccadilly earlier this week means services remain affected.
Manchester Piccadilly station will be closed from 23:00 on Saturday until 11:00 on Sunday.
Other stations, including Manchester Victoria and Oxford Road, are expected to operate normally.
Anyone planning to travel during the closure is being advised to make alternative arrangements.
Final advice
Organisers say the marathon is a major event for the region, bringing communities together and raising millions for charity.
They are urging runners and spectators to plan ahead, check travel updates and allow extra time for their journey.
