Passengers are being warned to expect major disruption at Manchester Piccadilly for a fourth day in a row, after damage to overhead electric wires.

National Rail says repair work has allowed most trains to start running more normally to and from the station again.

But some platforms are still out of use for certain services, with further work continuing on Sunday morning.

Disruption is expected to continue until approximately 11:00, with trains still being cancelled or changed.

Northern is asking passengers not to travel on a number of routes to and from Manchester Piccadilly until at least 11:00.

The disruption could also affect people travelling to the Manchester Marathon.

Which train operators are affected?

National Rail says Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales are all affected.

Avanti West Coast services between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston are impacted.

CrossCountry services between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street, Reading, Bristol Temple Meads, Southampton Central, Bournemouth and Paignton are also affected.

Northern says a number of routes are currently suspended, including services between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe, Stoke-on-Trent, Hadfield, Buxton, Alderley Edge, New Mills Central, Chester, Sheffield and Manchester Airport.

TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services through the station are also facing changes and delays.

East Midlands Railway is able to run as normal.

What passengers are being told

Northern is asking customers not to travel until at least 11:00 because no alternatives will be in place on suspended routes.

If passengers choose not to travel, refunds will be available from the point of purchase or through Northern's help pages.

Ticket acceptance is in place across a range of other operators and transport services, including Bee Network buses, Metrolink, Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales.

CrossCountry says all services will start or finish at Stockport until 11:00.

Avanti West Coast says rail replacement coaches will be on standby at Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport.

Transport for Wales says replacement buses will run between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow on services until 10:50.

Passengers are being told to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journey.

Questions over the disruption

The latest problems follow days of disruption after the overhead lines were damaged on Thursday.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham is demanding answers about how Manchester Piccadilly could face days of disruption only months after what was described as a once in a generation upgrade to railway equipment.

Network Rail's have apologised to customers and say the damage was caused on a complex and busy part of the network.

Passengers delayed by the disruption may be entitled to compensation, and are being advised to keep their ticket and make a note of their journey to support any claim.
