The Isles of Scilly passenger ferry Scillonian III has made her final sailing today, ending almost five decades of service between Penzance and St Mary's.

The vessel has provided a passenger link between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for nearly 50 years.

According to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, Scillonian III has carried more than five million passengers since entering service in 1977.

The company said she has supported tourism, the economy and the social fabric of the islands.

'Today marks the end of an extraordinary chapter'

Stuart Reid, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, said: "Today marks the end of an extraordinary chapter. Scillonian III has been part of the fabric of life in the Isles of Scilly for almost 50 years."

He said: "She has carried generations of islanders home, brought families together, taken visitors on their first journey to the islands and been there for countless moments, big and small."

Mr Reid said: "For those of us who have had the privilege of working with her, today is incredibly emotional. We know that saying goodbye to Scillonian III will feel very personal for many people, because she has been part of their lives too."

He added: "So today, we thank Scillonian III for her unwavering service and wish her well as she sails into the next chapter of her history."

Scillonian IV due in March 2027

The Steamship Group says the new vessel, Scillonian IV, is due to enter service in March 2027.

It is the final part of the group's £40 million vessel replacement programme, which the company says will ensure modern, resilient and future-proof passenger and freight services for the islands.

The Steamship Group says Scillonian IV will carry up to 600 passengers, a 24% increase on current levels, while reducing journey times.

It will have roll and pitch reduction systems to improve passenger comfort.

The company says it has been designed using modern propulsion technologies that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

It is also designed to integrate further enhancements as technology develops, according to the group.
