The Scillonian IV, a new passenger ferry for the Isles of Scilly, has embarked on its first voyage from Vietnam to the UK.

Departing from Ho Chi Minh City at 6 am local time, the 75-metre vessel is set to travel for approximately two months, taking the route via the Cape of Good Hope and France before reaching its final destination.

This journey mirrors the path taken by the freight vessel Menawethan earlier in the year and represents a pivotal moment in the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group's £40 million vessel replacement programme.

Ian Howard, Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, was present in Vietnam for the departure and shared his excitement: "Watching Scillonian IV leave Vietnam and begin her journey home was a hugely significant moment for everyone involved in bringing the vessel to life."

Scillonian IV, which can accommodate up to 600 passengers, will succeed Scillonian III, marking a new phase in travel to the Isles of Scilly.

"We’re now looking forward to welcoming her closer to home and beginning the next phase of preparations ahead of her entry into service in March," Howard said.

The vessel is crewed by a specialist delivery team, and the voyage will include several bunker stops before a final call at Piriou’s shipyard in Brittany, France, for a final survey. The ferry is expected to spend around three weeks in Brittany, where the Steamship Group’s technical teams will commence preparations, familiarise themselves with the new ferry, and support the final stages of the delivery process.

There will also be opportunities for additional crew members to join the ship for segments of the journey.

Howard added, "We know how important Scillonian IV is to the future of the Isles of Scilly, and we’re excited to be one step closer to introducing her to the communities and visitors she will serve."

This significant investment in passenger and freight services underlines the company's commitment to supporting island communities and enhancing travel experiences.
