A local MP is leading calls to make sure outdoor swimming pools like the Peterborough Lido stay open for future generations.

The lido on Bishop's Road was at risk of closure due to funding cuts, but now it's set to mark its 90th year when it reopens on March 28 for the new season.

"I want to open the door to us for getting more investment and support so the lido remains at the heart of the city, but also city life for years to come," Andrew Pakes, MP for Peterborough, said.

Mr Pakes is leading a debate in Parliament today (Wednesday) on the value of public baths and lidos on local communities.

In 2024, Peterborough City Council planned to mothball the site, which cost around £400,000 a year to run before the authority reversed its decision.

Putting lido on the map

The lido is now set to reopen slightly earlier than usual after the closure of the former regional pool, which has been demolished.

"Nearly two years ago, we faced a risk the lido would close," Mr Pakes said.

"We had a huge public campaign which turned it around so I'll be talking about that to put our lido on the national stage to ministers."

Residents have been asked to share their views on plans and designs for the new indoor swimming pool and leisure centre.

More than half of predicted costs for the development have been secured thanks to £20million in funding from the Government from its Growth Mission Fund, subject to the submission of a full business case.

“We know how important it is for residents to see a new, modern swimming pool and leisure centre in the city," Councillor Shabina Qayyum, leader at Peterborough City Council, said.

"We are committed to delivering one as quickly as possible."

Building work is set to start early next year, with completion expected in 2028.
