New Peterborough pool moves closer as designs backed
More than half the funding for the facility has been secured
Technical designs for a new swimming pool and leisure centre in Peterborough city centre have been recommended for approval, marking a major step forward for the long-awaited project.
The designs were backed at a city council Cabinet meeting, with more than half of the anticipated £36 million cost now secured.
This includes £20m from the Government’s Growth Mission Fund, subject to a final business case.
The new facility will feature an eight-lane, 25-metre pool, a learner pool with a moveable floor, a large fitness suite, soft play and studios.
Pool plans 'long time' coming
“We are rapidly progressing with our plans for building the new leisure facility and expect to have confirmation of Government funding in May 2026," Councillor Shabina Qayuum, leader of Peterborough City Council, said.
"We are working closely with our partners on the design phase and will be sharing more details of the design with the public in the summer."
“Our residents have been waiting a long time for this new pool, the Regional Pool closed in September 2023 and since then there have been no swimming facilities in the centre of Peterborough."
"Swimming is a fundamental life skill for young people and I will do everything in my power to get this new pool open as quickly as possible."
The facility is proposed to be based in the city centre to make use of public transport links and other commercial advantages.
Public consultation is set to begin this summer ahead of a planning application.
If the full funding is secured, construction could start in early 2027 with completion the following year.
