Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urgently calling on the public to be extra cautious after specialist rescue equipment was stolen from various service locations.

The equipment, including hydraulic cutters and spreaders, is essential for firefighters in saving lives, especially during road traffic incidents where prompt response is crucial.

The thefts, which have occurred over the past six months, are part of a worrying trend affecting the Fire Service, prompting a search for improved security measures with partners.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service emphasises the importance of community vigilance during this time.

They urge the public to promptly report any suspicious activity near fire stations or fire engines, particularly in rural areas.

Matt Cook, Chief Fire Officer for Avon Fire & Rescue Service, said: "We are here to protect local communities, and this equipment is carried so crews can save lives in the most serious emergencies.

"Anyone who targets these tools is putting added pressure on emergency services and risking the ability of firefighters to respond with the resources they need.

"By staying vigilant and reporting suspicious behaviour, the public can help us protect equipment that is relied on when lives are at risk."

Residents are advised to avoid confronting anyone themselves but are encouraged to call 999 without delay if they witness a crime in progress. Information that might assist the police should be reported via 101 as soon as possible.
