Police announce dispersal order area ahead of Taunton protest
Avon and Somerset Police said they "will not tolerate any criminality"
Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed a dispersal area will be put in place on Saturday (August 29th) ahead of a large protest in the town.
The protest is due to get underway at midday, and a large gathering is expected throughout the day from protestors and counter-demonstrators.
Officers are to be around the area, which stretches through the town centre, with the force saying they "will not tolerate any criminality and will be following well-rehearsed plans" on protest control.
The dispersal order will run from 8am to 8pm, and will be used as a way to stop any potential disorder breaking out.
Speaking on the announcement, Sam Bushen from Avon and Somerset Police said: "We know protests of this size are rare in Taunton, but Avon and Somerset Police has significant experience in enabling events of this nature to take place safely.
“Officers will be following plans which are drawn up to ensure the safety of everyone, while minimising disruption to the wider community.
“Peaceful protest is a fundamental part of our society, but action will be taken wherever criminality is identified.
“Our Taunton neighbourhood officers will be in the town centre throughout the day and will be happy to speak to anyone who has any concerns."
