A suspected Islamic State extremist from the UK, who is accused of travelling to a terrorist stronghold in Somalia hoping to become a "martyr", has appeared in court.

Mohamed Farah Mohamoud, 21, who lives in Bristol, allegedly plotted terrorist acts and went to the African country for five weeks between January 29 and March 4 last year.

He is accused of going to a "stronghold" occupied by extremists from so-called Islamic State.

At Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, Mohamoud appeared wearing a grey prison jumper and spoke to confirm his name and date of birth.

He first appeared in court last week, shortly after police announced he had been charged with preparation of terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

At that hearing, prosecutor Mark Luckett said: "His intention was to become a martyr and join the mujahideen, his ambition is to be a martyr on the battlefield."

Mohamoud's case was adjourned for prosecutors to seek consent from the Attorney General, which is needed for a charge of this nature.

On Tuesday afternoon, the court heard that consent was given and Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram sent the case to the Central Criminal Court.

Mohamoud, of Francombe Grove, Bristol, has been remanded in custody ahead of his first hearing there on February 13.
