A runner has died while competing in an event in Somerset's Mendip Hills.

They'd been taking part in The Big Cheese in Cheddar on Sunday (6th April), when a 'serious medical emergency' happened around four miles in.

Organisers posted on social media about the incident, and passed on their sympathies:

"As many of you may be aware, there was a serious medical emergency out on the course, and we are sorry to announce the tragic loss of one of our running community.

"We know many of you were affected either directly or indirectly by this event, and we thank you for your support. And I'm sure that you will join us in offering our condolences to their family and friends."

The Big Cheese had around 300 participants at the weekend, with the route taking runners across the Mendips, with 2,000ft of hills to make their away up and down.

Tributes have been paid to the runner on the organiser's post - many praising the emergency response to the situation and describing the loss as 'heartbreaking'.
