Resurfaced road in North Somerset is a rat run now
A pothole-plagued residential road in Weston-super-Mare has finally been resurfaced — only for the smooth surface to immediately become a popular rat run.
Residents of Ewart Road in Milton have petitioned North Somerset Council to implement traffic restrictions on the road “as a matter of priority.” The road had only recently been resurfaced, after a long battle by local councillors Catherine Gibbons and Richard Tucker (both Labour).
Presenting the petition to the council on September 8, Ms Gibbons said: “This is, I think, an unintended consequence of the fact that it is a wonderful road now and people like to speed down it.”
The 400 metre long residential road runs from Milton Road to Locking Road but for years has been plagued with potholes and a crumbling road surface. Ms Gibbons said that it was now “beautiful and smooth” since being resurfaced.
The petition stated: “We the undersigned of Ewart Road, Milton in Weston-super-Mare petition North Somerset Council to implement, as a matter of priority, traffic restrictions under the Road Traffic Act of 1984 on Ewart Road Milton to stop motorists including commercial and heavy vehicles from using the narrow residential road as a rat run from Milton Road to Locking Road.
“The restrictions would improve the environment for residents, reduce pollution, and provide improved road safety for pedestrians and school children.”
