Revised plans propose 422 homes and community hub in Bridgwater housing estate
Somerset Council to review major development expansion on Centenary Heights site
A proposal to enhance Bridgwater’s Centenary Heights housing estate with 422 new homes and a community hub has been submitted, awaiting Somerset Council’s decision within the next six months.
Originally granted outline planning permission in October 2020, this major development has been collaboratively driven by Cavanna Homes South West and Martin Grant Homes.
Cavanna Homes is executing the first phase, delivering access points on the A39 and constructing 109 homes. Martin Grant Homes has submitted plans for the northern phases, incorporating 422 additional homes and a community hub near the western entry point.
The revised proposal reduces the total projected homes to 660, covering northern phases between current construction and existing dwellings on B3339 Wembdon Hill.
Planned infrastructures include a vehicular access through estate roads, a bus gate providing car-free access, and additional pedestrian and cycling routes. Four large attenuation ponds will mitigate local flooding risks, secured for resident protection.
Of the 422 homes in this phase, 30 percent—equivalent to 127 properties—will meet affordable housing targets for developments within the former Sedgemoor area.
Housing options vary from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom houses, including 12 flats above the community hub near the planned primary school.
Spokesperson for Grainge Architects described the project's landscape-led approach, emphasizing connectivity through green corridors, open spaces, and robust pedestrian routes linking the estate with Bridgwater town and surrounding amenities.
Somerset Council’s planning committee north is likely to decide publicly on the scheme due to its significance, ensuring transparency and community involvement in Bridgwater’s expansion.
Meanwhile, Persimmon Homes Severn Valley will soon announce the commencement of its adjacent development of 323 homes on Quantock Road's southern side.
