As temperatures rise across Cambridgeshire, the county’s fire service is urging everyone to stay safe around open water.

It comes after a boy died earlier this week in Wimblington, with emergency services called out to reports of a child in the water.

Police say they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Joe Gacon from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue says two thirds of people who drown never intended to go in the water at all.

“If you are waterside at this time of year, be aware that the water is extremely cold," he said.

"So take care by the water’s edge; if you do fall in, cold water shock can make you unable to control your breathing.

"The worst thing you can do is try and swim—float on your back until you can regulate your breathing.”

Cold water shock can be 'overwhelming'

Joe also warned that water can be much colder than the air, even on hot days.

“Water cools your body 25 times faster than air; it’s just so overwhelming, you cannot breathe,” he added.

Asked on his advice to parents, Mr Gacon said: “Don’t tell your kids no, tell them why.

"Help them make more informed decisions and better judgement; help them to understand how cold the water might be

"It’s like holding a snowball too long without gloves, that feeling all over your body.”

The fire service is reminding everyone to enjoy the weather safely.
