Man dies following collision with HGV in Peeblesshire

A man has died following a collision with a heavy goods vehicle in Peeblesshire.

Tragedy struck on the A72, around a quarter of a mile north of the village of Skirling, around 12.50am this morning (Monday).

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.

But the 59-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead on their arrival. His family is aware.

The road was closed for most of the day, while road traffic investigators tried to piece together what happened.

The route - near the Edinburgh-Biggar road, and boundary with South Lanarkshire - reopened around 7.30pm.

There are no other reported injuries. And police say enquries are ongoing.

Sergeant Jamie Humpage said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died at this difficult time. 

“As our enquiries into the crash continue, I would urge anyone who has any information that may assist our investigation or relevant dash cam footage of the area around the time to contact police.”

The incident comes less than a week after a suspected hit-and-run on the same stretch of road.

Police are continuing to appeal for information after a cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries following a collision with a vehicle around 3.30pm on Tuesday.

A 36-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment, and anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 2010 of August 11th.
