Man detained under Mental Health Act following Newton-le-Willows hospital attack

A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act over an alleged attack at a community hospital in Newton-le-Willows.

Six people required treatment following the incident, which took place at Newton Community Hospital on Tuesday (30 December).

The man, in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding, affray and criminal damage, and taken to a police station.

Officers are continuing investigations at the hospital, and are carrying out forensic examinations on a metal bar, believed to have been used as a weapon.

Extra patrols are taking place around Newton-le-Willows and a mobile police station has been set up at the scene.

St Helens Local Policing Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said: “We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence.

"I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers or contact their local police station.”
