A police officer is recovering in hospital after being hit by a car in Cheadle in Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police were called to an incident in the car park of a retail park on Wilmslow Road late on Saturday night (January 25th).

There have been reports that the incident took place in a Sainsbury's car park close to the Cheadle Royal Hospital.

Officers had received reports that a number of people had been acting suspiciously in the car, and as a result, an officer was sent to investigate.

In response to the incident, a female police officer approached the car, but as she walked towards the car - she noticed that the car had been driving at speed towards her, eventually hitting her.

The officer was eventually taken to hospital for her injuries, where she is recovering from serious injuries sustained in the attack.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in response to the incident; his status remains currently unknown.

Speaking about the incident, Greater Manchester Police said that they condemn any attack on an officer on the front line of protecting the community.

Chief Inspector John Picton from Greater Manchester Police said: "This incident is truly shocking, and shows how quickly situations our frontline officers attend can escalate.

"There is absolutely no explanation as to why this incident needed to end the way it did.

"Our officers go to work every day to provide an outstanding service to the communities they serve, and achieve fantastic results in situations that are often challenging.

“Assaults on our officers are completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. In this case, the officer suffered serious injuries.

“Our investigation is continuing, and the officer is being supported by all of us at the Stockport district. She is recovering well.”
