Holocaust Memorial Day: 80th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation
Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation
Events and services are being held across the UK and around the world, to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
On this day in 1945, soldiers fighting against the Germans took over the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland.
Between 1940 and 1945, about 1.3 million people, mainly Jewish people, were deported to Auschwitz by Nazi Germany, and it's thought 1.1 million were murdered.
Events, such as memorials and services have been taking place over the weekend, and will continue over the next few days.
The Holocaust Centre North, in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire was founded by survivors, they will host an Evening of Commemoration at the University of Huddersfield on January 28.
Alessandro Bucci, centre director, and Professor Tim Thornton, the university's deputy vice-chancellor, will introduce the evening.
He told us: "It's a big anniversary, because we are in a phase of transition, where the holocaust passes from living memory to history as fewer and fewer survivors are able to tell, what happened to them and their families."
