Rush made significant setlist changes, including a full performance of their seven-part opus ‘2112’ for the first time in almost 30 years, at their second Fifty Something Tour date at Los Angeles Kia Forum on Tuesday (9th June).

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson with touring drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Loren Gold kicked off their tour in spectacular style with a rapturously received Kia Forum gig on Sunday, and they played the second of four sold-out LA gigs last night.

Speaking to Rolling Stone last October, Geddy Lee promised that Rush will switch things up between shows, explaining: “We plan on changing the set every night. There will be a large percentage of songs that we will switch between nights.

“So if you come to say four shows in Toronto, you're going to hear four different sets. That's going to include a lot of songs, obviously. They are obviously the big favourites that you sort of have to have in the set list every night. But we really want to keep the set fresh.”

Rush’s concert on Tuesday opened with the same two songs as Sunday, ‘Xanadu’ and ‘The Spirit of Radio’, and then, true to Geddy’s word, they gave 1982 ‘Signals’ track ‘The Analog Kid’ its tour debut.

‘Leave That Thing Alone’ and ‘Headlong Flight’ also had tour debuts, while ‘Hemispheres’ classic ‘The Trees’ had its first live outing since 2008.

However, the biggest surprise of the night came in Rush’s second set when they played all seven suites of their masterpiece song ‘2112’ from start to finish.

It marked the first time Rush had played ‘Part III: Discovery’, ‘Part V: Oracle: The Dream’ and ‘Part VI: Soliloquy’ as part of the whole 20-minute ‘2112’ suite since the Test for Echo Tour way back in 1997.

Other tour debuts in set 2 on Tuesday included ‘Animate’, ‘Closer to the Heart’, ‘A Passage to Bangkok’, ‘Anthem’ and ‘Witch Hunt’, while ‘Finding My Way’ was performed before set closer ‘Working Man’.

Rush play their third Kia Forum show on Thursday 11th June and they finish the residency on Saturday 13 June before heading to Mexico City next week.
