Mr Balding was best known as the trainer of Mill Reef who won several top races including the Derby, Eclipse, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - victories that helped secure him the champion trainer title in 1971.

His daughter, broadcaster Clare Balding, posted on Facebook:

“My Dad was one of a kind. Fearless, funny and charming, he was an all-round sportsman, a great trainer and a beautiful horseman.

"He loved his dogs, his horses and his family - probably in that order. He shared with me his passion for sport and taught me to be brave enough to chase a dream, even if it seemed impossible. We’ll miss him so much."

Tributes have also come from former jockey Frankie Dettori who said:

"Ian Balding was a tremendous supporter of mine in my early days. We shared some wonderful moments together."

Ascot racecourse and The Jockey club also posted tributes saying they were 'deeply saddened' at the news.
