Officers from Essex Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) were conducting speed checks on the A120 in Takeley on Saturday 4 January, when they recorded a car travelling at 140mph.

After recording the speed they followed the driver and, were able to catch up with the distinctive Lamborghini Urus near Stansted Airport.

While speaking to the driver officers noticed illegal tinted front windows.

The car was then seized under anti-social driving legislation, which is where the manner of driving is considered inconsiderate, careless or dangerous and puts other road users at risk.

The driver was reported for speeding and driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition as the tinted windows fell below 30% of light transmission.

Fred McKennon, 60, of Elmstead Road, Colchester, appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on Tuesday 12 August where he was banned from driving for 56 days for speeding, received three penalty points on his licence for the tinted windows and was issued with almost £1,700 in fines and costs.

PC Matthew Mehen of Boreham Roads Policing Unit said after the hearing:

"Speeding at this level is completely unacceptable and shows a reckless disregard for safety. Excessive speed dramatically reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions and shortens braking distances, all of which are clearly outlined in the Highway Code.

Ignoring speed limits not only endangers lives but is a criminal offence. We will continue to take firm action against anyone who chooses to break the law and put others at risk."
