Investigators are working to establish the cause of a fatal house fire in Ashford that claimed the life of a teenage girl on Sunday 28th December.

The girl has been named locally in tributes as Lily Kennedy.

The blaze, which broke out at White Admiral Way in Hamstreet, was described as “intense” by Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) crews who were called to the scene shortly after midday.

Six fire engines and a height vehicle were sent to tackle the flames and contain the spread, but the fire tragically resulted in the loss of a girl's life.

Another child and an adult remain in hospital following the incident, the fire service said.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service Chief Executive Ann Millington said, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by this tragic incident, especially the child’s loved ones.”

Crews remain at the site

The fire at the semi-detached property was extinguished late on Sunday, but firefighters were still present on Monday morning to carry out work at the scene.

KFRS confirmed that two fire engines and a technical rescue unit were operating to ensure structural safety, alongside Kent Police, as the investigation continues.

Incident Commander Alan Standing explained, “Crews are working closely with Kent Police to ascertain the cause of the fire. We’ll remain on site throughout the day, ensuring everyone’s safety as the investigation develops.”

Impact on the community

The tragic circumstances of the incident have deeply affected the local Hamstreet community.

A welfare hub has been set up at Hamstreet Village Hall to support residents.

Mr Alan Standing has addressed concerned neighbours, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family, their loved ones, and indeed the wider community. We understand that this type of incident can have a significant impact on everyone nearby, and we are here to support.”

Tributes have been laid at the scene

Fire safety reminders

KFRS is urging residents across Kent to review their fire safety measures following this tragedy. Resources and guidance are available on the Kent Fire and Rescue website to help prevent house fires and ensure safety within homes.

“Our website has advice on fire prevention that can help protect Kent families and their homes. We encourage everyone to take proactive steps to check fire alarm systems and stay mindful of potential hazards,” Mr Standing added.

Investigation ongoing

While the fire is thought to have quickly spread throughout the property on arrival of crews, the exact cause remains unknown. Investigators from KFRS and Kent Police will continue working closely to uncover further details about how the blaze began.
