The trailblazing football player, Josh Cavallo, has publicly alleged that homophobia from Adelaide United's new management affected his career and opportunities on the pitch.
Cavallo, who made history as the world's first openly top-flight gay male footballer, made claims that his time with the club was not hindered by football performance or injuries - but by discrimination following his decision to come out.
According to the statement shared online, despite remaining professional and working hard daily, he says he felt their contributions were ignored and sidelined due to his sexuality.
The former player said his experience led him to question whether coming out publicly was a mistake and described feeling isolated, citing instances of teammates mocking a picture of him with his partner.
He added that leaving Adelaide United and taking a fresh start in the UK has provided a chance to reconnect with football and recover from the impact this situation had on his wellbeing.
He's thanked fans for their support and expressing gratitude for his time in Adelaide, despite what he described as a difficult ending behind the scenes.
In a statement, Adelaide United said: "Adelaide United is aware of a statement published on social media this morning by former player Josh Cavallo.
"The Club is extremely disappointed by the claims made and categorically rejects the allegations, including any suggestion that Adelaide United is homophobic. All on-field decisions relating to team selection are made solely on footballing grounds.
"Adelaide United has always been committed to fostering an inclusive environment for players, staff and supporters and we remain proud of our ongoing work to promote inclusion across football.
"Strengthening inclusivity must remain an ongoing focus for the game, and the Club looks forward to hosting the fourth annual Pride Cup this weekend against Melbourne Victory.
"The Club will not be making any further comment at this time."
