A driver has admitted responsibility for the death of a 25-year-old man in London's West End after a Christmas Day crash.
Anthony Gilheaney, 31, is currently on trial at the Old Bailey, facing multiple charges related to unprovoked attacks against five people in the early hours of 25th December 2024.
Gilheaney admitted to the manslaughter of Aidan Chapman, who suffered fatal brain injuries after being hit by Gilheaney's Mercedes. Mr Chapman passed away in hospital on New Year’s Eve.
The defendant also pleaded guilty to other charges, including unlawfully wounding Arif Khan, causing grievous bodily harm to Marcelo Basbus-Garcia and Miguel Waihrich, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Tyrone Itorho.
Despite these guilty pleas, prosecutors have told jurors that eight remaining offences, including murder, attempted murder, and causing grievous bodily harm, still need to be considered.
Last week, Gilheaney told the court that he was intoxicated and not in control of his vehicle after he had allegedly been attacked earlier that night. He said his dangerous driving was unintentional and apologised for his actions, describing himself as “reckless” and a “coward.”
Jurors heard that Gilheaney had been circling back to try and pick up his pregnant girlfriend when the crash occurred. The prosecution claims he intentionally targeted pedestrians, motivated by racist and homophobic intent.
The trial continues.
