Murder investigation underway after Chesterfield man dies

20-year-old man arrested as police seek witnesses

A murder investigation has been launched in Chesterfield after a 53-year-old man died following an assault earlier this week.

Jason Smith, of Southgate Way, Barrow Hill, was reportedly assaulted at a house on Southgate Way just before 1pm on Tuesday 20th January.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly passed away on Thursday evening, 22nd January.

A 20-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

Jason’s family have been informed of his death and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police appeal for information

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers are appealing to residents in the area and drivers who were in Southgate Way around 1pm on 20th January to check any CCTV or dash cam footage for evidence.

People may notice increased police presence in the area, which will remain throughout the weekend as officers carry out their work.
