Bomb disposal team remove 'suspicious item' from Bristol house after terror arrest
A 21-year-old man is being held on suspicion of trying to join the Islamic State group
Bomb disposal teams have removed a suspicious item from a home in Horfield after police arrested a 21-year-old Bristol man on suspicion of trying to join the Islamic State group.
The item was located during a pre-planned operation at a residential property yesterday.
Explosive Ordinance Disposal specialists assessed and removed the item, and the police cordon has now been lifted.
A small number of people who had been asked to leave their homes as a precaution have been able to return. However, officers remain at the property while search activity continues.
The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing South East, supported by Avon and Somerset Police and Counter Terrorism Policing South West.
The man remains in police custody and is being held on suspicion of attempting to join a proscribed organisation (Daesh) under the Terrorism Act 2000, section 11.
Chief Inspector Keith Smith of Avon and Somerset Police thanked the Horfield community for their understanding during the operation and reassured residents that there is no believed risk to the wider public.
“There is not believed to be any risk to the wider public however I appreciate police activity can cause some people to feel concerned," Smith said.
Anyone who sees or hears something that could be related to terrorism is urged to call police confidentially on 0800 789 321 or, in emergencies, dial 999.
