A venue that is dedicated to Motӧrhead frontman, Lemmy, has officially opened its doors.
The establishment is located at Old No. 6 on Market Square in Burslem, the bar will serve ‘Lemmy lemonade’, while its mini-museum will help raise funds to transform the Queens Theatre into Kilmister Halls.
Hundreds gathered for the official opening at midday on Friday. After the black ribbon was cut by legendary heavy metal figure, Steve ‘Krusher’ Joule, the former art director for Kerrang, punters were invited in.
The walls of the venue feature memorabilia and artwork of Lemmy and Motӧrhead, with some items even for sale. It is located a stone’s throw from the Lemmy statue that was unveiled last year, which contains a portion of Lemmy’s ashes.
Sculptor Andy Edwards speaking to LDRS who created the Lemmy statue, said: “I think it’s very overdue but very necessary that we remind the world that this unique individual originated on these streets where we are now. I don’t know about these things but it does feel like there’s something being commuted, you do feel like there’s something in the air.
“Everybody is working together to make each other laugh, feel comfortable, we’ve got somewhere to sit and the right music on. It is a proper extended family and this is how it used to be in those industrial communities that we live in.
“Someone said that music is the closest thing we can perceive to the holy spirit and on days like today that feels like a real thing. Burslem has been neglected for years but through that neglect and that reflects the people who built this city were thrown on the scrap heap, along with the architecture but you look around and they are gorgeous buildings, they inspire and they hold on to something and we’ve having it back, thank you very much.”
Burslem is also getting ready to host its first urban rock festival later this month organised by the Ian Fraser Kilmister Legacy CIC, headlined by Motӧrheadache. The festival will take place across Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May.
