Aston Villa have announced they plan to take legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher over comments he made about the club and its fans on a podcast.

The club responded in a statement on X on Friday evening, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris.

"Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans," the statement said.

"Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football. Nassef Sawiris, Chairman."

Carragher made his remarks on the Stick to Football podcast while discussing the prospect of Unai Emery replacing Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

He used strong language aimed at Villa fans after facing criticism for suggesting Emery should consider taking the Manchester United job.
