Arrest after car hit and seriously injured pedestrians in Derby city centre

Police say the incident happened around 9:30 last night.

A man has been arrested after a car hit and injured pedestrians in Derby on Saturday.

Derbyshire Police said a number of people had been injured, some of them seriously, in the incident in the city centre.

We know that ambulances transported a total of seven people to hospitals nearby.

Police said the car believed to be involved was stopped after the incident in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and is in police custody.

Police have asked anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift in Derby around the time of the incident to get in touch.

The force’s statement said: “Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.”

Friar Gate is completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street and it's expected to be closed for some time with people are asked to avoid the area.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service said they received a call at 9:31pm yesterday, Saturday 28th March, to reports of a medical emergency. Here's part of their statement:

"We sent a number of resources including three paramedics in three ambulance cars, seven ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.

"We transported seven patients between Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre."
