West Yorkshire Police officer handed community sentence for off-duty assault
The Bradford based Sergeant also admitted to a charge of intentional strangulation
A West Yorkshire Police Officer has been handed a community sentence, after admitted to an assault which happened when he was off-duty in Kirklees.
Sergeant Edward Howard, based at Bradford District, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court today, where he admitted to charges of assault and intentional strangulation following the incident on November 10 last year.
The court issued Howard a 12-month community order, and he will have to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay £400 in compensation, a £114 surcharge, and £85 in prosecution costs.
Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, Head of the Professional Standards Directorate at West Yorkshire Police, said:
"Sgt Howard has taken responsibility for his actions, and this behaviour falls well below the standards we expect.
"It is vital we uphold the highest standards and our officers lead by example on and off duty.
"Now that the case has concluded, misconduct proceedings will be considered."
