Woman dies after being hit by a car in Featherstone

A woman has died after being hit by a car while crossing the road in Featherstone.

Emergency crews were called to Wakefield Road on Monday evening.

Officers have arrested a twenty six year old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving - he is still being questioned.

Anyone who saw what happened or has dashcam footage is being urged to contact police.

A Police statement said:

"Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision involving a pedestrian in the Featherstone area.

"The Major Collision Enquiry Team (MCET) would like to speak to anyone who has information about or footage of the collision which took place at the junction of Wakefield Road and Common Side Lane near Featherstone on Monday evening (8 September).

"Emergency services were called to Wakefield Road at just before 6.40pm after a grey Cupra Born, which had been heading towards Wakefield, was in collision with a woman crossing the road at Common Side Lane.

"The victim, a 40-year-old Pontefract woman, was given emergency medical treatment but sadly died at the scene.

"Officers arrested the Cupra driver, a 26-year-old Pontefract man, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody today.

"Road closures were put in place in the local area while investigation and recovery work was conducted around the scene."

Detective Sergeant Nina Roper of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said:

"A number of enquires remain ongoing into this incident which has sadly resulted in a woman losing her life.

"Officers are supporting her family and we are appealing for any witnesses and relevant footage showing the incident. We would also like to hear from anyone who saw the Cupra and the manner in which it was being driven in the moments before the collision took place.
