A West Yorkshire Police Officer who raped a woman over two decades ago has been jailed for seven years.

The court heard PC Jo Lavender was found guilty following a trial at York Crown Court of one count of rape which happened in 2002.

The 45-year-old had joined as a police staff member earlier that year before he became a police officer in 2005.

Lavender, who was working in Leeds District at the point of his suspension, was found guilty on 19th October following a trial at York Crown Court of one count of rape.

He appeared again at York Crown Court today where he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and added to the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.

A woman has provided a powerful statement to the court as a West Yorkshire Police officer was jailed today after being found guilty of raping her over 20 years ago:

“I can say knowing that I was believed gave me a sense of relief and that someone confirmed what had happened to me was wrong did help me.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, Head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said

“Today’s sentencing reflects the seriousness of PC Lavender’s offending. His actions were a gross abuse of trust and are wholly incompatible with the values and standards expected of those who serve the public.

“I hope that the victim feels that justice has been served. It is her courage and resilience that has helped ensure he has been held accountable for his actions.

“West Yorkshire Police remains committed to tackling violence and sexual violence against women and girls, holding offenders to account, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. There is no place in policing for individuals who commit such offences and misconduct proceedings will now follow.”
