Council highways officers have raised safety concerns over plans to install an 8m-high sign outside Wakefield Trinity’s rugby league ground.

The Super League club has applied to place the illuminated structure near a car park entrance at the DIY Kitchens Stadium on Doncaster Road.

The authority’s highways development team called for it to be “scaled down” due to it posing “visibility issues” for road users.

Documents submitted by the club stated the sign would be situated further away from the junction than the standard 2.4m usually required.

In response, a highways officer said: “However, due to its height and size it would still likely result in a distraction to drivers. Specifically in its location.

“It may cause visibility issues for larger vehicles such as coaches or those providing maintenance or catering.

“The advertising board should be scaled down and relocated further back from the junction to reduce the level of distraction.”

The officer also requested the club submit more information on the new sign’s brightness and the images it would display.

They added: “With regards to the display, the transition from one image to another is required to be instantaneous with no moving images to be shown on screen, with all advertising to be static imagery.

“Images displayed should also not imitate traffic signs. Details on the image display would be needed.”

The council’s planning department has yet to determine the application which was submitted earlier this month.
