Wakefield man convicted of manslaughter after assault in pub

A Wakefield man who inflicted fatal injuries on a grandfather he punched in a pub has been convicted of manslaughter.
Harry Mannion, aged 28 of Springfield Grange Wakefield was yesterday found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of the manslaughter of Mr Tony Powles following an incident at a Wakefield pub last year.
Mr Powles, aged 62, suffered a serious head injury after being punched and knocked to the ground by Mannion in an altercation at the Red Lion pub in Wakefield during the evening of Thursday 9 October.
The 62-year-old Wakefield man tragically died in hospital on Wednesday 22 October from the head injury he sustained.
Mannion, who had been arrested and charged with Section 20 assault, was later further charged with manslaughter and remanded in custody till his trial
The 28-year-old will now be sentenced on 20 July.
DCI Dan Bates of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who led the investigation, said:
“We welcome the jury’s verdict today convicting Mannion for his violent actions on that night which sadly robbed a much loved father and grandfather of his life.
“This has been another dreadful case which highlights the consequences such violent acts can have and how even just one blow can lead to a person losing their life.
“We hope today’s verdict can bring some comfort to Mr Powell’s family as they continue to come to terms with his loss, and now await Mannion’s sentencing in July.”
