Work begins to transform Shipley Market Square
Future markets will be held on pop-up stalls underneath a new canopy being created in the centre of the square.
WORK to transform Shipley’s Market Square has finally begun, after months of delays.
The town’s fixed markets will be removed, and new green spaces added to the square.
Future markets will instead be held on pop-up stalls underneath a new canopy being created in the centre of the square.
The spaces will also be used for public events throughout the year, and new seating areas and “rain gardens” will be installed.
A separate scheme will see the town’s public toilets reopened.
The estimated completion date for the work has been pushed back several times. Currently, it is not expected to be completed until November.
Rising costs of materials had been blamed for the costs spiralling.
Contractors began working on the site earlier this week, and the works will be phased to allow the square to continue holding markets.
Funding for the project is through £1m of Streets for People funding from West Yorkshire Combined Authority and it has been allocated a further £3m of Government funding through the Government-funded Shipley Towns Fund.
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning, and transport, said: “We are excited to start this transformative scheme to make Shipley town centre greener and more welcoming.
“We’ve seen the amazing results of the public realm work we’ve undertaken in the city centre and we want to bring those same principles into the heart of Shipley.
“Removing the old market stalls will not only improve the look of the town centre but also make it feel safer and more welcoming, particularly at night. It will also give us the opportunity to revitalise our outdoor market offer.
“By creating an inviting and flexible space, we will increase footfall, support our shops and restaurants, and help businesses to thrive. This is a significant step towards creating a vibrant and adaptable town centre with a thriving market.”
Alec Porter, acting chair of the Shipley Towns Fund Board added: “The revitalisation of Shipley Market Square is not only a strategic investment in our community but also a boost for local businesses.
“The work will also include new street lighting and the resurfacing of the existing car park. This transformation aligns with the towns fund’s commitment to economic growth and enhancing the overall well-being of our town.”
