Food waste bins will be sent to over 225,000 homes across the Bradford District in the coming months ahead of collections being launched in September.

From this month all councils across the country are required to provide weekly food waste collections for all residents – a policy that dates back to 2021 and the Conservative government.

Despite this deadline, many councils have not been in a position to start the collections due to delays in procuring waste vehicles.

Bradford Council will begin its collections in September and has received £4.8m from the government to purchase collection vehicles and tens of thousands of bins for the roll out.

A report detailing the changes to the authority's waste policy said: “Food waste bins will be collected on a weekly basis, and residents will be issued with a kitchen caddy and an external food waste bin.

“Food waste will consist of:

• All uneaten food and plate scrapings

• Baked goods such as bread, cakes and pastries

• Dairy products, eggs and eggshells

• Fruit and vegetables including raw and cooked vegetables and peelings

• Out-of-date or mouldy food

• Pet food

• Raw and cooked meat or fish, including bones

• Tea bags and coffee grounds

“Food waste bins containing items that are not ‘food waste’, as described above, will not be emptied.

“The food waste collection service operates Monday to Friday and service delivery will commence from September.”
