Martin House is celebrating the completion of its £21.9 million redevelopment project, THE BUILD, which aims to safeguard children’s palliative care across Yorkshire.

The new-look hospice in Boston Spa will open its doors on Friday, 5th June, with Sir Gareth Southgate performing the ribbon cutting at a special launch event.

Families receiving care from Martin House, alongside supporters, staff, and community partners, will gather for the occasion.

THE BUILD modernises and expands the hospice, introducing specialist facilities such as a hydrotherapy pool, an immersive sensory room, and recording studio.

A new Education Centre will support palliative care training in the region, catering to the evolving needs of children with life-shortening conditions.

Meeting changing care needs

Construction for THE BUILD commenced in autumn 2023, following a major public fundraising appeal.

Martin House is responding to clinical advancements that allow children to live longer with more complex conditions.

Bethany Harrison, whose son Thomas is supported by Martin House, shared her appreciation:

“We wouldn’t cope without Martin House. They put you and your child at the centre, giving us that extra level of support - it’s just like another member of the family to help us.”

The enhanced facilities mean Harrison's family will enjoy their first swim with Thomas in the hydrotherapy pool.

Long-standing transformative support

Every year, Martin House provides free services to more than 550 children and young people and around 200 bereaved families throughout West, North, and East Yorkshire.

Chief Executive, Clair Holdsworth, commented on the significance of the redevelopment:

“THE BUILD is so much more than bricks and mortar. It’s about creating a modern, family-focused hospice that matches the extraordinary quality of care our teams provide every day.”

The hospice's commitment has also been acknowledged by its ambassador, Sir Gareth Southgate, who praised its personalised care.

As headline sponsor, HARIBO UK contributed significantly to funding THE BUILD through various fundraising activities.

Phil Murphy, Chief Marketing Officer at HARIBO UK, expressed pride in their role supporting the project.

“The redevelopment ensures Martin House can continue adapting to the needs of families across Yorkshire when they need us most,” added Holdsworth.
