A man who was arrested upon his return to the UK from Iraq has been jailed for sexual offences against a teenager in Kirklees.

Zana Adil Mohammed, 48 and from Huddersfield, has been sentenced to 62 months for offences more than a decade ago.

Mohammed appeared at Leeds Crown Court on April 9 where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual activity with a child during December 2011.

The 48-year-old was convicted of five offences related to sexual activity with a child and four counts of making indecent images or pseudo-images of children.

Mohammed initially fled to Iraq during the early stages of the police investigation.

However, in October 2025, authorities learned of Mohammed's plans to return to the UK.

He was arrested upon his arrival at Birmingham International Airport on October 16 and subsequently held in custody, charged, and detained to appear before Leeds Magistrate’s Court on October 18.

Detective Constable Leanne Sanderson of West Yorkshire Police said:

"Mohammed clearly poses a significant risk to young males, and we welcome his sentencing at court."

"The appalling offences he committed deeply affected his young male victim and I would personally like to thank him for his bravery in reporting this crime and his support of the investigation.

"It has taken a lot of courage to disclose such abuse, and we hope that seeing Zana jailed will give him some measure of closure.

"We continue to urge all victims of unreported sexual assault to come forward. No matter when the offending took place, we will always listen and do all we can to investigate, provide support, and seek justice for you."
