A Wetherspoon pub wants later opening hours after failing to get permission to serve drinkers on a famous pub crawl.

The Golden Beam in Headingley has applied to Leeds City Council to extend the hours it can serve alcohol.

A variation to its premises licence would allow drinks to be sold until midnight, Sunday-Thursday and 12.30am at weekends.

Last month the Headingley Lane pub was blocked from removing a licence condition preventing it from admitting people on the Otley Run.

Twenty-two objections have been received to its latest application from people living nearby and Headingley Green Party councillor Tim Goodall.

Coun Goodall’s letter said: “Allowing the Golden Beam to open later is likely to lead to increased consumption of alcohol, which is then likely to lead to an even higher rate of drunk and disorderly crime.”

The pub crawl has drawn complaints of anti-social behaviour including violence, littering and public urination.

The application to allow Otley Runners into the pub was met with 145 objection letters. West Yorkshire Police and Alex Sobel MP were among the objectors when a licensing hearing was held in December.

At the time, JD Wetherspoon argued that allowing Otley Runners in would ease problems on the crawl by offering more space, food and toilet facilities.

The current licence allows alcohol sales until 10.30pm during the week and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The condition preventing Otley Runners in the pub was offered by Wetherspoon when it was first granted a licence in 2020.

One objector wrote: “Please don’t ruin our neighbourhood any further by allowing this pub to go back on all its promises.”

Councillors will consider the licence variation at a Civic Hall hearing on Tuesday, January 20.

They will have the option of granted or refusing the application, or allowing it with additional conditions.

Measures already in place at the pub include door supervisors and CCTV.
