Police patrols are being stepped up in Leeds in response to the stabbing of two Jewish men in London earlier today.

The attack in Golders Green is being treated as a terrorist incident, with a 45 year-old man being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

The victims, aged 76 and 34, are said to be stable in hospital.

Leeds is thought to be home to the second or third largest number of Jewish people in the UK, outside of London, with many living in the north of the city.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “We understand this incident will be deeply concerning for our Jewish communities.

“We have been reassured by senior police colleagues in Leeds that increased patrols are being put in place at key sites across the city, including synagogues and Jewish schools, with officers providing visible reassurance and engagement, supported by council colleagues and other key partners, recognising that serious incidents like this cause understandable fear and distress.

“From a community intelligence perspective, police colleagues are also encouraging the reporting of any suspicious or concerning activity.

“Leeds City Council stands against hatred and violence in all its forms. We will continue working with partners to ensure all our communities feel safe, supported and protected.

“Acts that target or intimidate any community, whether through hate, hostility or violence, have no place in society.”

Assistant Chief Constable Damien Miller, West Yorkshire Police lead for Local Policing, said: “We recognise the concern and distress that the stabbing in Golders Green, London, today will have raised within the Jewish community, and our thoughts are with all those affected.

“We have well-established links with the local Jewish community and continue to work with representatives and partners, such as the Community Security Trust, to provide reassurance and support.

“Our neighbourhood policing teams will be increasing their patrols and presence to provide additional reassurance. Anyone with information about any suspicious activity is asked to contact us on 101 or www.westyorkshire.police/livechat.”
