A Leeds man has been jailed for almost seven years for causing the death of his passenger in a crash in Scarcroft.

Nicolae Subtirel, 27, from Edgware View, has been sentenced to six years and nine months following the death of Petru Serban - he was also disqualified from driving for nine and a half years.

The crash happened at 6:25am on October 17 2022 on the A58 Wetherby Road in Scarcroft, involving a collision between a silver Vauxhall Zafira and a blue Honda CR-V.

35 year old Petru who was a passenger in the Zafira, was transported to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Several other people needed medical treatment, including the driver of the CR-V and another passenger in the Zafira who suffered from multiple broken bones.

It was confirmed that the Zafira was being driven at a dangerously high speed, estimated at around 70MPH, exceeding the 30MPH limit.

Detective Constable Chris Todhunter of West Yorkshire Police said:

“This case demonstrates the very real dangers of speeding and the sadly fatal consequences that it can have."

"In addition to the prison sentence he will now serve, Subritel must live with the knowledge that his actions resulted in the death of his friend and work colleague.

"Multiple families have been devastated by his choice to speed that morning.

"I hope those involved and the wider public are reassured that Subritel has been held accountable for his actions.”
