Former Kirklees Mayor suspended from Lib Dem group on council

The reason for the suspension is not yet clear

A Kirklees councillor has been suspended from the local Lib Dem group.

Councillor Cahal Burke (Lindley) was suspended from the group ‘without prejudice’ on Wednesday, March 4. It is not yet clear the reason for the suspension.

Leader of the Lib Dem group, Cllr John Lawson, said: “I can confirm that Cllr Burke has been suspended from the Kirklees Liberal Democrat Group.”

Kirklees Council also confirmed it had been notified of the suspension.

No details of the circumstances which led to Cllr Burke’s suspension have been made public.

Councillor Burke, who has represented the Lindley ward since 2010, is now listed as an Independent councillor on Kirklees Council’s website. He was the Mayor of Kirklees between 2023 and 2024, and is still named as Chair of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee on the council page.

With Cllr Burke now suspended, the political make-up of Kirklees Council is as follows: Labour (23); Conservatives (16), Independents (11); Lib Dems (9); Community Alliance (4); Green Party (4); Community Independents (2).
