An investigation is underway after a serious collision in Wakefield.

Police say a cyclist has been critically injured after a collision with an SUV on the A636 Denby Dale Road.

A 66 year old man is in hospital.

West Yorkshire Police said:

"Police are appealing for information following a road traffic collision in Wakefield last night in which a cyclist was critically injured.

"The collision, which involved a grey Omoda 5 SUV and a pedal cycle, occurred at around 10:05pm yesterday on the southbound A636 Denby Dale Road near to the traffic light junction with Thornes Road.

"The rider of the pedal cycle, a 66 year old man, received life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance where he remains in a critical condition.

"The driver remained at the scene and has been spoken to by officers.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are carrying out enquiries into the collision and are appealing for witnesses to the incident or the circumstances leading up to it."
