A 26-year-old man has been arrested after the rape of a woman on the University of Huddersfield campus.

The incident happened early Sunday morning (March 1) on fields near the Barbara Hepworth building between 3am and 4:30am.

A suspect, who's from the town, is currently being questioned.

Detective Inspector Will Denton, who is leading the investigation for West Yorkshire Police, said:

“I understand this incident has caused some concern in the local area, particularly among students, and I want to reassure people that a thorough investigation is continuing at pace.

“Following enquiries overnight a man has been arrested and he remains in custody for questioning.

“The victim continues to receive support from specialist officers, and there is an increased neighbourhood policing presence in the area to provide reassurance to residents.

“We are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information which may be helpful to the investigation.

"In particular we would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious near to McDonalds on John William Street or on Cross Church Street from 2am onwards on Sunday morning.”
